Coffee Ready? – Loaf By Loaf
Words From the Grey

Coffee Ready?

I love coffee. Coffee is a gift. Coffee is a choice. And I choose it daily.

This morning as I was sipping on a fresh cup, the Lord began showing me that He is THE Master Roaster. Allow me to expound and we will see what brews. 😉

MAKING COFFEE…COFFEE.

Coffee beans are the seed of a coffee cherry. The outer flesh must be removed to reveal the seed. The seed is green, and smells grassy, when harvested. It has no appealing taste or smell. In order to bring it to a consumable product, it must go through 3 stages: Drying, Browning, and Developmental Roasting. (Sound familiar? 😉 )

DRYING

Drying is interesting. Drying requires a slow rise in temperature until the beans begin to have a reaction to the heat. This process is rather short, as the best is yet to come, but drying brings energy to the bean for the final stage of the roasting process.

BROWNING

Oh this is the fun part–the longest part–but a LOT happens here! During this stage, heat is increased a little at a time until the coffee beans start to smell like bread toasting in the oven. 🙂 The drying process is still going on, but things are progressing nicely. Thousands of variations of aromas and colors develop during this stage because of the uniqueness of each bean in the roaster. The Roast Master will carefully monitor the beans to ensure the desired outcome. At the end of this stage, the coffee beans will crack. With the beans now open, let the developmental stage begin.

DEVELOPMENTAL ROASTING

At this stage the beans have collected so much energy they want to explode. But the Master Roaster carefully alters the time and temperature so that the desired aroma is developed. He knows when to remove the beans from the roaster for optimum flavor. Here’s where trusting the Roast Master is needed. He knows the exact timing for release from the process.

Many amateur roasters ruin beans by intervening and removing the beans from the roasting process too soon, or yet ignoring them in it. By doing so, the beans become under-developed or too smoky, and too bitter, for enjoyed consumption. Never trust an amateur.

Trust The MASTER.

Are you being Dried? Browned? Roasted? You can TRUST the Roast Master. He’s making a BEAUTIFUL thing in you for others to enjoy. 🙂
