Only – Loaf By Loaf
Desperate for Different

Only

Several weeks ago, I read the story of David and Goliath.  I love this story for so many reasons–David’s bold willingness to face adversity, his disregard for doubters, and His confidence in God Almighty.  But I was most impacted this time, however, by a single word.

Only.

…Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.  1 Samuel 17:40 (NLT)

So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.  1 Samuel 17:50 (NLT)

David had “only” and a giant in front of him.  Yet, David triumphed with “only.”

It’s as if God hit my heart with this thought, “What’s your only?”  Confidence welled up in my soul and I began to dream big, to think creatively, and to believe that, regardless of my lack, I could triumph with “only.”

As believers, our greatest hindrance to success is our focus.  The enemy will do his best to make us keenly aware of all our weakness and inability.  But God calls us to look away from ourselves and toward Jesus.  When our eyes are up, the “only” in our hand becomes irrelevant.  After all, God can use a sack lunch to feed multitudes, a rod to perform miracles, and a sling and a stone to slay giants.

So, just as God asked Moses, I’ll ask you, “What is that in your hand?”  (See Exodus 4)  Or, in other words, what’s your “only?”  I pray your answer is bolstered with the confidence, vision, and hope found only in Him. 🙂

“Now thanks be to God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ…”
2 Corinthians 2:14
