I found this book through Mom. She’d been reading it, then began texting me photos of entire passages from its pages. Interestingly enough, the subject matter was EXACTLY what I’d asked the Lord to teach me some days prior: Law vs. Grace.
To a Christian, understanding this contrast is vital.
Andrew Murray maps out the differences so beautifully and highlights foundational truths that are often missed in the modern day church. He says of the law:
The law burdens and condemns and slays. It can waken desire, but not satisfy it. It can rouse to effort, but not secure success. It can appeal to motives, but gives no inward power which beyond man himself has.
And of grace:
Its exceeding abundance is seen in the free and full pardon there is of all transgression, in the bestowal of a perfect righteousness, and in the acceptance into God’s favor and friendship.
I’ll be honest, this is not an easy read. The book is meaty, with old school language, and you can’t possibly glean all it reveals in a single pass. Even so, it will arouse a new and refreshed hope in the full salvation of Almighty God. It will increase neediness and gratitude for Jesus. And, it will open eyes to see the beauty of the New Covenant, the danger of the Old, and the importance of recognizing the difference.
Read it! You won’t regret it.
