Give and It Will Be Given

Over the last week, my daughter had a cold.  As you might know, getting a small child to blow their nose with force can be challenging.  So, one night I said almost jokingly, “I’ll give you a buck for that booger.”  Wouldn’t you know?  She blew her nose in a way she’d never blown her nose before.  I knew I couldn’t keep up the rate, so the next time she had trouble clearing her sinuses, I offered a quarter.

Today, she’s well, but keeps her single dollar and four quarters safely hidden in her wallet just waiting for the day we’ll go to the dollar store.

Well, this afternoon, I was in a funk.  Praying aloud at my desk, I started to weep.  (You see, I’m a bit of a crier in general–it’s one of my more embarrassing traits.)  Anyway, my daughter walked behind me, noticed my tears, and, without hesitation, pulled out a quarter from her wallet.  She wanted to cheer me up, so she gave me something of real value. Needless to say, the tears increased, and I immediately took her to my closet, opened my change purse, and let her grab a handful.

As she skipped happily out the door, the Lord used this scenario to display real, Biblical truth.

“Give, and you will receive.  Your gift will return to you in full–pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap…”
Luke 6:38 (NLT)

I did not need my baby’s money.  After all, I’d given it to her in the first place!  Still, her willingness to give some away out of love for me, compelled me to bless her with even more.

And Luke 6 plainly promises that our Father will do the same. 🙂

Off to the dollar store,
